Ulcerative colitis (UC) is an inflammatory bowel disease that causes an imbalance of the colonic mucosa and a relapse function of the colon. In proctitis, which is around 50% of the ulcerative colitis cases, the affected area is just the rectum. In left-sided colitis (30% of cases), the inflammation extends to part of the colon.
